Douglas seeks to treat the urban environment not simply as the backdrop for human activity but as a complex, integrated system. The city is examined both in its physical (geographical, climatic, geomorphological) dimensions and its socio‑economic, ecological, health, and regulatory dimensions. The goal is to understand how various components interact, how urban systems metabolize resources (inputs & outputs), and how human and non‑human elements co‑exist, conflict, or depend on each other in cities.
