Goya was born in Fuendetodos, Spain, and trained in Zaragoza and Madrid. Early in his career, he produced works in the Rococo style, including tapestry cartoons for the royal court. These early paintings are light, colorful, and focused on scenes of leisure and everyday life.
His talent brought him success, and in 1786 he became a court painter, later rising to First Court Painter to King Charles IV. This position gave him access to wealth and power but also allowed him to observe the corruption, vanity, and inequality of Spanish society.
