The Nineteenth Century was a period of profound transformation in art, shaped by industrialization, scientific progress, political revolutions, and rapid social change. Traditional academic art, rooted in history painting and idealized forms, gradually gave way to new approaches that reflected modern life and individual experience. Movements such as Romanticism emphasized emotion and imagination, while Realism focused on everyday subjects and social realities. The invention of photography challenged painting’s role as a record of reality, encouraging artists to explore perception, mood, and personal vision. By the late 19th century, Impressionism emerged as a decisive break from tradition, redefining art as a direct response to visual experience and setting the stage for the development of modern art in the twentieth century.
