The Renaissance was a major cultural movement in Europe that began in Italy around the 14th century and lasted until the 17th century. The word Renaissance means “rebirth,” and it refers to the renewed interest in the art, culture, and knowledge of ancient Greece and Rome. Renaissance art marked a dramatic shift away from the flat, symbolic style of the Middle Ages toward a more realistic, human-centered, and scientific approach to art.
