Buddhist art and architecture in Pakistan represent a significant chapter in the history of Buddhism, as this region once formed the heart of ancient Gandhara, one of the most important centers of Buddhist learning and artistic production. Flourishing mainly between the 1st century BCE and the 5th century CE under the Mauryan, Indo-Greek, and Kushana rulers, this tradition is best known for its distinctive Gandhara style, which combined Indian Buddhist themes with Greco-Roman artistic elements. Numerous stupas, monasteries, and viharas discovered at sites such as Taxila, Takht-i-Bahi, Jamal Garhi, and Swat Valley reveal a well-developed monastic culture supported by trade routes and royal patronage. Sculptures from this region are celebrated for introducing the first human representations of the Buddha, characterized by realistic facial features, wavy hair, serene expressions, and draped garments resembling classical Roman robes.
