The movement is characterized by loose, visible brushstrokes, bright and unmixed colors, and an interest in how light changes throughout the day. Instead of painting in studios, many Impressionists worked outdoors (en plein air) to observe natural light directly. Shadows were often painted using color rather than black, giving their works a vibrant and lively quality.
