Mahāyāna Buddhism (“The Great Vehicle”) emerged in India around the 1st century BCE to 1st century CE as a movement that expanded earlier Buddhist teachings. Mahāyāna texts emphasize universal compassion, wisdom, and the ideal of the bodhisattva—one who seeks enlightenment not only for personal liberation but for the liberation of all beings. These texts were composed mainly in Sanskrit, Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit, and Prakrit, and later translated into Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, and Japanese.
