Islam began in the 7th century CE in Mecca (in modern-day Saudi Arabia) with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, who Muslims believe received revelations from God (Allah) through the angel Gabriel. These revelations were later compiled into the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book.
After Muhammad’s death in 632 CE, leadership passed to his successors, known as the Caliphs, marking the start of the Caliphate period. Under the Rashidun, Umayyad, and Abbasid Caliphates, Islam spread rapidly across the Middle East, North Africa, Spain, and parts of Asia, becoming a major world civilization known for its advances in science, medicine, mathematics, art, and literature.
